GT's HEM sapphire is the premier sapphire used by leading LED companies for the production of high quality wafers. HEM sapphire material is produced in a highly automated process that allows the growth of uniform crystalline structure, no bubbles or inclusions with high purity levels. This combination of attributes allows for the uniform deposition of GaN thin films during the MOCVD process. The HEM sapphire-based substrate improves yields at the device level as photoluminescence wavelengths are homogeneous.Downstream chip yields are improved because of the sapphire’s intrinsic low stress condition.

Applications

GT's HEM sapphire high crystal quality and low manufacturing costs are enabling the general lighting industry to transition from fluorescent lighting to LED based lighting. Over 80% of GaN based lighting is produced using sapphire as the underlying substrate material. The leading general lighting companies have chosen HEM sapphire for their large diameter manufacturing processes. The availability of high quality C-plane sapphire in diameters up to 10” allows for economies of scale and binning reductions at the MOCVD level.

GT Crystal Systems has developed the Optical Homogeneity Technique (OHT) for material inspection, characterization and qualification.The OHT method has been optimized and improved with over 40 years of use in grading sapphire material. The OHT inspection process ensures that our sapphire meets the quality requirements of the LED Industry. All LED-grade material is free of lineage defects, has low bubble inclusions and has better than 99.996% purity levels.The crystal homogeneity is inspected using polarized light to ensure that the crystal lattice shows no lineage, slips, twins or other crystalline defects exist. Intense light sources and index matching fluids are utilized to identify inclusions and chemical analysis is conducted on the material composition to ensure high purity levels. These techniques along with over 40 years of experience interpreting the results allows vast material characterization capabilities which have been verified with independent homogeneity testing and other analytical techniques.
